External hard drives are becoming very popular today as a means of backing up data replacing CD-RWs and even tape drives. Most of the major hard drive manufacturers are now offering external hard drives as part of their product line.

External hard drives are also engineered to dissipate heat. Some external hard drives are hot-pluggable, and feature both an IEEE 1394 "FireWire" interface as well as a USB's connectors.

USB and Firewire hard disks are simply cases containing a standard IDE or SATA hard disk using in most cases USB or Firewire interface adaptors, therefore are subject to all usual issues related to IDE & SATA hard drives plus other issues specifically related to the external devices, for example:
 
-when the external drive is dropped, knocked over any similar abuses.
-when the external drive get overheated, flooded or subject to intense vibration.
 
Stop using the device as you may cause further damages to the unit in the same time not allow the system to run a repair utility on the drive (such as Scandisk / or any 3rd party scanning software) as this can make recoverable data unrecoverable.
